SUMMARY:Voices of the Karoo | ARCO-PACT String Orchestras
DESCRIPTION:“Voices of the Karoo” \nThe Kaleidoscope Music & Arts Festival opens not with arrival\, but with emergence. Voices of the Karoo brings together more than one hundred young musicians—from Blink Begin Crèche\, Prince Albert Primary School\, Albert College\, and Kweekvallei—many of whom are stepping onto a stage\, or holding an instrument\, for the very first time. \nOver the past eighteen months\, the ARCO-PACT Strings Project has provided free instrumental tuition to these learners\, creating a space in which music becomes both a discipline and a language of connection. What we hear this morning is not simply repertoire\, but the sound of learning in motion: early techniques taking shape\, listening deepening\, confidence growing. \nThe programme draws on Afrikaans folk song alongside South African musical traditions\, from Sarie Marais and Suikerbossie to Pata Pata and Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika. Familiar melodies are reimagined for young string players\, allowing cultural inheritance and new musical experience to meet. This is a concert rooted in access and shared opportunity\, but also in something quieter: the act of beginning\, together. \nThe ARCO-PACT Orchestras are directed by Principal Teacher Tiaan Uys and Assistant Teacher Aiden Stalmeester

Like its title suggests\, this programme traces lines across time\, style\, and geography—each piece carrying its own distinct direction and energy. \nFrom the serene beauty of Bach’s Sheep May Safely Graze to the haunting soundscapes of Jóhann Jóhannsson’s Song for Europa\, the programme moves between past and present with ease. Piazzolla’s electrifying Libertango and lively traditional works such as Mexican Beauties and Soldier Songs bring global musical traditions into dialogue\, while Bossa Verde and Celtic Overture evoke rich cultural landscapes. \nThe journey continues through popular favourites\, including Michelle by The Beatles\, Believer by Imagine Dragons\, and From the Start by Laufey—each offering a fresh perspective on contemporary song. \nVectors is a programme of contrasts and connections: a dynamic exploration of how music travels\, transforms\, and points us toward new ways of listening. \nGrey High School String Orchestra is directed by Jan Hendrik-Harley. He is assisted by fellow teachers percussionist Simon Cameron and double bassist Mariechen Meyer. \n  \n\n  \nAbout Grey High School String Orchestra  \nThe Grey High School String Orchestra is an integral part of a vibrant and diverse music department that supports five full-time ensembles\, including the Grey Wind Band\, Grey Jazz Band\, Grey Voices\, and the Grey Symphony Orchestra. Known for its innovative programming and commitment to collaboration\, the String Orchestra regularly partners with Nelson Mandela University\, fostering meaningful musical exchange and development. \nThe ensemble maintains an active performance calendar\, touring regularly and engaging with audiences beyond the school community. In 2025\, the orchestra was awarded Double Gold at the Pearson Praeludium\, recognising both its technical excellence and artistic distinction. \nBeyond performance\, the orchestra plays a vital role in regional music-making\, annually hosting a strings festival that brings together young musicians from across Nelson Mandela Bay\, contributing to the growth and sustainability of string playing in the region.

SUMMARY:String Celebration: Music for All | Frank Pietersen Music Centre String Orchestras
DESCRIPTION:Music for All both encapsulates the goal of Frank Pietersen Music Centre as well as the variety of music showcased at this concert. Learners from all walks of life coming together to create music for all – from Western Classical to Cape Goema\, this concert is sure to get you dancing to the music of the soundtrack of your life. \nThis concert will showcase the Junior\, Intermediate\, and Senior String Ensembles of the Music Centre. Each Ensemble will perform on its own as well as joining as a combined String Orchestra at the end. \nThe music will be fun and enjoyable for everyone attending. To add to the String Ensembles\, our percussion teacher Annemie Nel has written percussion parts tailor-made for each specific percussion learner\, adding that extra spice to our menu. \nOur concert will open with the Junior Strings\, a group of 20 members of all ages who are late beginners as well as very young beginners\, all having fun together. \nThe Intermediate Strings are a very vibrant ensemble of 28 players. Their repertoire with its energetic rhythms and interesting harmonies is enjoyable to listen to and will remind many a concert attendee of bygone times. \nThe Senior String Ensemble is made up of 5 violinists directed from the piano by Hadley Duminy. Their programme is a Kaleidoscope of various well-known melodies\, but also some exciting new repertoire played by the senior violinists of the music centre. \nTo end off the concert all the string players will combine in the 53+ member String Orchestra\, performing three South African Medleys\, and will have everyone walking out with a smile on their face and a melody in their heart. \n  \n\n  \nAbout the Frank Pietersen Music Centre – 56 Years of Musical Excellence \nFor over five decades\, the Frank Pietersen Music Centre (FPMC) has been a beacon of musical creativity and learning in the Cape Winelands. What began as a small community initiative in 1970 has grown into a thriving institution that continues to nurture musical talent across all backgrounds and ages. \nA major breakthrough came in 1992 when the Department of Arts and Culture provided funding for woodwind\, brass\, and string instruments\, allowing the Centre to expand into full orchestral training. When Athlone Teachers’ College closed in 1993\, FPMC found a permanent home in the college building\, where it continues to operate today. \nOn April 1\, 1994\, the Frank Pietersen Music Centre officially became a state institution with Vaughan Pietersen as principal. This marked the beginning of unprecedented growth and development. \nOver the past three decades\, we’ve expanded our programs\, added specialized departments\, and welcomed talented educators to our team. Our students regularly excel in external examinations\, competitions\, and festivals\, while some have even participated in international exchange programs. \nAt the end of September 2024\, Vaughan Pietersen retired after leading the Music Centre for 35 years and Hendrik Marais was appointed as the new Head of Frank Pietersen Music Centre.

This concert promises to be a delightful and memorable experience for all. \nRustenburg High School String Quartet is directed and tutored by Maria Raynham. \n  \n\n  \nAbout Rustenburg Girl’s High School \nThe students are all members of Rustenburg Girls’ High School\, an all-girls school in Cape Town. Rustenburg is an innovative\, values-driven institution that strives to create a strong sense of belonging while empowering young women to become compassionate leaders of change. \nThe school is committed to providing a safe\, supportive\, and inclusive environment. SUMMARY:Aria | Gqeberha String Trio
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the monumental Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach and the visceral Bachianas Brasileiras no. 5 by H. Villa-Lobos\, this programme is an exploration of the emotive qualities of art song and its adaptation to instrumental music. The trio also plays several other works that range from the lyrical Playford Suite to the energetic Erlkönig by Schubert\, demonstrating the striking similarities between stringed instruments and the human voice. \n  \n\n  \nAbout the Gqeberha String Trio \nAfter a noteworthy induction at St. Mary’s Cathedral in April of 2021 and following a hugely successful tour of the Garden Route the Gqeberha String Trio performed at the National Arts Festival and the Ama Zing Addo festivals\, reinventing the conventional string trio with the inclusion of the double bass. \nIn a programme that seamlessly weaves together the unconventional combination of violin (David Bester)\, viola (Jan-Hendrik Harley) and double bass (Mariechen Meyer)\, the Gqeberha String Trio takes listeners on an exploration of the humble art song: music inspired by song as well as arrangements of art songs. The diverse works chosen for this programme compliments the singing quality of each of the instruments and is sure to entice the senses.

In this context\, it serves as a quiet commentary: a moment of introspection after a programme that celebrates complexity\, identity\, and the modern South African soundscape.

Mbatha and Lupambo\, both still in training\, perform alongside established artists\, continuing the festival’s defining side-by-side ethos of mentorship and collaboration. \nThe programme traverses a rich musical landscape\, from the introspective textures of Arthur Feder’s The Silent Corners and Amneusis and Remembrance on the Bridge\, to the playful ingenuity of Paul Hindemith’s Musikalisches Blumengärtlein und Leyptziger Allerley. Solo reflection emerges in Giovanni Sollima’s Lamentatio\, while the viola is further illuminated in works by William Henry Bell and Walter Swanson.
